Proposal for the establishment of a UK Stem Cell Foundation
Brief
Professor Sir Chris
Evans and Steven Parker approached College Hill Life Sciences for assistance in
producing a proposal document to make the case for the establishment of a
foundation to support stem cell research.
They had identified a funding gap that was inhibiting the translation
of early stage laboratory research on stem cells into clinical
applications. Recognising that the
field is seen as being too risky for venture capital backers or
pharmaceutical companies, they realised that research with great medical
therapeutic potential could go to waste unless funds to support further
developments could be found. They have proposed the establishment of a
foundation, with private and public funding, to support the next stages in
clinical development. Northbank worked with Steven Parker and Sir Chris Evans
to help with the editing and production of a report proposing the foundation
be formed that could be used to secure support.
Objectives
 |
To develop
clear, punchy copy that makes a compelling case for the establishment of the
foundation |
 |
To produce
and print the report in a cost effective but professional manner, appropriate
for distribution to a wide range of policy makers and influencers |
Methods
 |
Northbank
was provided with draft copy, which was reviewed, supplemented and edited to
develop a compelling case in support of the foundation |
 |
Images were
sourced and illustrative diagrams developed to provide visual interest |
 |
The copy was
laid out in logical sections with fast text copy down the sides of the pages
to facilitate quick review |
 |
Several
hundred copies were laser printed, bound and circulated late autumn 2004 |
Results
 |
The
report generated so much interest that several reprints of hundreds at a time
were necessary in order to meet demand |
 |
The
proposal reached the hands of senior policy makers, including Prime Minister,
Tony Blair |
 |
The
report was instrumental in securing the support of several high profile
scientists, politicians and business people, including Sir Richard Branson,
Sir Richard Sykes, Lord Winston, Lord May, Nick Ross and Steve Jones |
 |
The
proposal to set up the foundation has generated considerable media attention
and added considerable political pressure to ensure that stem cell research
is funded appropriately to allow its development within the UK |
