Northbank Communications reports on recent conferences

Genesis
The third London Biotechnology Network Conference – Genesis – was held again at the QE II conference centre on 11 December 2003.

Genesis was set up to showcase London's offering in terms of research / commercial collaborations with the university medical schools and existing London-based biotech companies. On average 60% of the exhibition stands were allocated to biotech companies from London and the rest of the UK and Europe. A good show of tech transfer people made the conference a particularly good networking opportunity for early stage companies. The closing drinks reception accompanied by a live Blues Band was a great way to start the festive season and show off your dancing skills! The conference was buzzing with approximately 800 attending delegates and 80 exhibitors. At the conference, London First welcomed its new Director, Dr Tony Jones.

Biotech and Finance Forum
Northbank was appointed as the PR partner for the Biotech Finance Forum which took place in Barcelona on the 15th, 16th and 17th December 2003. The Hotel Rey Juan Carlos provided a spectacular venue and many delegates were pleased to escape dreary London to the milder weather in sunny Spain! The conference was the first major pan European biotech event to take place in Spain. Barcelona is one of the most active scientific and technical hubs in Southern Europe and has twenty companies and three research centres in its Science Park.

Katja Stout and Dr Eileen Paul attended the event on behalf of Northbank and also engaged in the ‘Venture Academy’ coaching day. As part of a panel of experts, they provided feedback and advice on the delivery and content of corporate presentations for investors.

The conference was attended by 250 industry members, venture capitalists and licensing executives from the pharmaceutical industry and showcased some 60 of the most promising European biotech companies. Delegates were in festive spirit and the best networking probably took place in the hotel bar!

The forum was originally launched by the European Commission as part of a platform to support entrepreneurship in biotechnology. The organizers, Europe Unlimited, will host the next biotech event in Munich in 21-23 June 2004 and Northbank will once again be the PR partners. For more information see http://www.e-unlimited.com
