Northbank
Communications reports on recent conferences
Northbank staff
have been out and about, pounding the beat and pressing the flesh
at leading events in the life science calendar in support of our
clients and, of course, to meet new companies as part of our own
business development efforts. Conference attendance helps keep us
up-to-date with what’s going on, so here’s what we gathered
since July.
The Biotech
and Finance Forum - Northbank once again partnered with E-Unlimited
to raise awareness of the conference in the press
For the 2nd time running, Northbank was PR partner for the Biotech
and Finance Forum. June’s event took place in Munich and was
attended by Sue Charles, Katja Stout and Katerina Winterstein. Sue
Charles played a key role in coaching the presenting companies at
the ‘Venture Academy’. Northbank negotiated discount
prices for presentation slots for its clients. Press attending included
Douglas Merrill who wrote a prominent piece for BioWorld International.
Northbank also wrote an article entitled ‘Biotech…Back
on Track’, which was successfully placed in the journal Bioforum
Europe.

UK EPIC
Earlier in September, London was the setting for the brand new
European Partnering and Investment Conference (EPIC) on the 16th.
A speaker panel of largely UK companies presented over the course
of the day in six themed sessions: Cancer, Vaccines/Immunology,
Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Regenerative Medicine and Neuroscience.
Attended by Douglas Pretsell, the event was sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline
and the audience included both investors and pharmaceutical licensing
professionals. Organisers operated a meeting scheduling service
to hook up presenting companies with potential partners and investors.
This is an event that will hopefully become an annual fixture and
a focus for deal making and investment.

Scandinavian
Nordic Venture Summit
Every Scandinavian country was represented at the recent Nordic
Venture Summit on 27th September in Copenhagen: an impressive array
of biotechnology, medical device and technology start-ups and more
mature private companies from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland
and even Estonia! The one day summit was preceded with a Venture
Academy that allowed companies to practice their presentations and
'elevator pitches' with one-to-one training. Katja Stout, Associate
Director at Northbank, was one of the trainers and felt that the
Venture Academy gave a significant boost to those companies that
were able to benefit from it. It was certainly clear during the
summit which companies had been to the Academy and which had not.
And, as there was a good turnout of Nordic VC's, the added advantage
of a more polished performance hopefully paid dividends. The Summit
itself was a mix of short presentations and scheduled break-out
sessions where short meetings were scheduled between presenting
companies and interested VCs. The breakout sessions looked extremely
busy and everyone we spoke to seemed to feel that the event had
been of great help to them. Lets hope that it all paid off with
concrete investment offers in the end!

Drug Discovery
Technology
8 –13 August saw this year’s Drug Discovery Technology
take place in Boston, Massachusetts and with over 6000 delegates,
more than 400 exhibitors and 160 speakers, the event has been proclaimed
as the industry’s largest drug discovery conference and trade
show. This year’s theme, “Expanding Drug Pipelines through
Innovation”, seemed to hit home and ‘innovation’
definitely was the key word, with over 90 new product launches taking
place. James Parkinson was on hand to sample the hustle and bustle
of the exhibition hall in this, its 9th year, and supported attending
clients, met the media and spread the Northbank word. DDT once again
proved to be ‘the’ drug discovery event to attend and
visiting Boston in August just happened to be a bonus!
