BIA celebrates 50th anniversary of the discovery of DNA structure

The 50th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA structure by James Watson and Francis Crick was marked by a series of events in the bioscience community organised by the BIA. Northbank worked with the BIA to suggest presenting companies, target media and event venue, and on the day was there to support its clients Solexa and RiboTargets.

On 22nd April the BIA organised an international media day featuring a series of presentations by bioscience CEOs in Cambridge and London. 16 journalists attended, including contacts from the Economist, Financial Times, Sunday Times, Independent on Sunday, Reuters, Bloomberg, BioWorld, In Vivo Europe, The Asian Age, Nikkei and Cambridge Evening News.

The group toured Cambridge Antibody Technology's and Arrow Therapeutics' facilities and enjoyed presentations by Acambis, Arrow Therapeutics, Cambridge Antibody Technology, Celltech, Cyclacel, GlaxoSmithKline, Inpharmatica, Microscience, Oxagen, Oxford GlycoSciences, PowderJect, RiboTargets and Solexa.

Following the event, Marianne Brun Rovet wrote a review piece for the Financial Times with both RiboTargets and Solexa featuring prominently.

The day was followed by an evening reception at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, hosted by Science Minister Lord Sainsbury and FCO Minister Bill Rammell MP at which Northbank was represented by CEO, Sue Charles.

Addressing the audience of leading figures in the bioscience industry as well as the media, Lord Sainsbury said:

"There is, I believe, much to celebrate: the brilliant discovery of the structure of DNA 50 years ago; the golden age of British bioscience which followed it; the successful growth of the UK biotech industry; and the international scientific cooperation which over the last 50 years has developed molecular biology to the point where it has penetrated the whole of biology.

"As well as producing 50 years of exciting science the discovery of the structure of DNA has also given birth to a new industry, the modern biotechnology industry in which the UK is one of the world's leaders. Because of the strength of our science base, the UK biotechnology industry is the largest in Europe."
