View from
the inside: two internees share their work experience views
During the summer
of 2004, Northbank took on two science graduates as internees to
experience the PR industry. Jason Wong was placed at the Congleton
office, near Manchester, and Matt Lovell worked at the London office.
Jason Wong:
A full service communications consultancy focused on science based
companies', from first impressions it sounded ideal for a scientist
unsure of where to go after graduation. I applied and within a fortnight
I was driving along the M6 to Congleton for my first day, I was
not to be disappointed. As soon as I entered there was an open and
relaxed atmosphere; music from the studio filled the rest of the
office (although sometimes a somewhat dubious selection), friendly
account executives/managers doing their utmost to satisfy all parties
and the efficient admin team maintaining the smooth running of the
Company. Having started off with the unenviable task of tidying
up the database, I was soon exposed to the many areas that Northbank
excels in; copywriting, project management and writing for Nature
just to name a few projects. My time at Northbank has been very
rewarding and has opened my eyes to a profession that I may not
have been exposed to otherwise. I wish to thank everyone who I have
worked with and I hope that this will not be a final farewell.
Matt Lovell:
Arriving at Northbank at the beginning of the summer, I was unsure
of what to expect, not really knowing what work in a PR agency would
involve. Seven weeks on, having been thrown into a busy working
environment and having assisted with account executive support for
a range of the Northbank clients, I feel I have a much better idea
of the daily work of a fast paced agency like Northbank. It has
given me the opportunity to be involved in national press launches,
help write Product Focuses for Nature magazine, work on creating
the ABSW handbook and so much more that I have come away from this
experience overwhelmed by the amount I have learnt in such a short
space of time. It has been great fun working at Northbank this summer
and has given me a good sounding of PR, should I decide this is
the direction I want to head towards when I finish my degree next
summer.
